Details and dates of our classes are shown below... Wood Turning with Nick Barberton This 2 day course is a fantastic opportunity to learn how to woodturn or increase your skills. the course caters for a maximum of 3 students and enables Nick to give you the high level of tuition. The focus of the course will be in techniques and everyone will be able to use the lathe. Fabric Manipulation Techniques with Mary Bird This five week course course explores creating texture with fabric. Pleat, scrunch, twist, fold, fray and burn fabrics to add 3D textures to your patchwork and quilting. During the course a wide variety of fabric manipulation techniques will be demonstrated and practiced building a comprehensive reference portfolio of interesting new surfaces. Silver Clay Jewellery with Hilary Bowen During the workshop you will be introduced to the silver clay and make at least one piece of silver jewellery to take home. Examples include pendants, a ring or earrings. All tools are provided, but students will be expected to pay for the silver clay they use, typically around £22 depending on quantity. Silver Jewellery with Kathryn Arbon This is an introductory jewellery and silver jewellery making course intended for those who would like to have a go at designing and making their own piece of jewellery. The jewellery making techniques that will be covered include piercing, soldering and polishing. Animals in wire with Helen Godfrey During this one day workshop you will learn techniques for creating a three dimensional small animal form of your choice using wire netting. You will have guidance throughout the day to help you create an individual sculpture for your home or garden. During the day it will be possible to produce a small animal such as a lamb, cat, chicken or any other animal of your choice. Mixed Media Illustration with Yvonne Lee A workshop for anyone interested in image making. Create an illustration using different art materials to produce a truly unique image. Clay Clocks with Janna Edwards A workshop inspired by our recent exhibition Minutes:Hours:Days which featured a collection of ceramics, prints and collages with a time theme created by adults with learning difficulties. Tic Toc make you're own clock, is a fun workshop which will enable you to create your own individual clock using air-drying clay. Insight - Craft Dialogues As part of a series of discussions about craft, making and Walford Mill's relationship with makers, a number of well-known Dorset based craftspeople will be inviting small audiences into their workshops for enjoyable, informal evenings with light snacks and refreshments to discuss the big issues 'Maker to Maker', please see below for details on each of the sessions: Insight - Craft Dialogues with Simon Thomas Pirie in his studio As part of the the 'Insight - Craft Dialogues' Simon will be hosting an evening in his workshop and gallery space near Briantspuddle. The session will include a tour of the workshops, seeing his current work in progress and a brief presentation of his past work. The discussion part of the evening will focus on marketing, how & where to sell work, the practical issues of survival for makers , plus what makers want and expect from Walford Mill. Insight - Craft Dialogues with Jonathan Garratt in his studio Jonathan Garratt will be hosting a walk/talk discussion tour of his pottery 2 miles east of Cranborne towards Alderholt for anyone interested in his processes, questions of marketing and how to signify crafts/build links with general public. Jonathan has 30 years' experience of retailing from the door and a wide variety of 'show' experiences to pass on to others, involving preparation, show skills, pricing and presentation. Insight - Craft Dialogues at Walford Mill An opportunity for informal discussions with resident makers Kathryn Arbon (Jeweller) and Debby Kirby (Silk Weaver) about how to successfully work, sell and market direct to the public. Forming a relationship with the customer , and the importance of subject knowledge at point of sale. Makers can spend half and hour with both Kathryn & Debby. Creative Kantha with Tricia Warman More information coming soon. Patchwork & Quilting - Design & Make with Mary Bird Mary will help you to develop your ideas, starting with inspirational source materials such as photographs, magazine illustrations, a sketch that you have made or maybe a found object. Suitable techniques for interpreting your design in fabric will be explored and a clear precise pattern produced. The Course is for those who have basic patchwork and quilting Skills. Fabulous Fascinators with Simon Meanwell-Ralph Have fun creating your own Fabulous Fascinator! Students will create a headpiece using sinamay and feathers which can be worn to compliment your outfits for all those special occasions throughout the summer! Colour options will be black, navy, red, turquoise, jade and hot pink unless request is submitted by 31st March 2012 for an additional colour. Glass Bead Workshop with Liz Guilmant-Cush A course aimed at both beginners & improvers, teaching the art of lampwork glass beads using murano glass. Learn how to make your own glass beads by melting glass and winding it round a rood to form unique and beautiful shapes. We will cover basic forming, shaping and decorating techniques using a hothead torch. Garden Obelisks and Mini Hurdles with Kim Creswell This is a one day workshop for garden lovers in which students will make obelisks fir climbing plants, and mini hurdles for garden borders. No previous experience with willow is necessary. Gypsy Frame Baskets with Kim Creswell More information coming soon. Hand Coloured Aluminium Jewellery with Caroline Parrott Students will spend the morning experimenting with techniques to apply colour & pattern to the metal, successful prints will then be reproduced on to pre-cut shapes which can then be formed in to jewellery after lunch following the metal sealing process. Caroline will also demonstrate cutting the metal with a jewellers piercing saw should you wish to have a go. Paper and Wire Sculpture with Peter Rush The long awaited return of Peter Rush to our workshop programme. This method of paper and wire sculpture was devised by Peter and can give very realistic results, he has taught it in many popular classes. You can make anything including animals, birds, small human figures, life size heads, and puppets. See www.peterrushart.co.uk for more information. Colouring fibres with Natural Dyes Talk by Judy Hardman Many plants contain dyes which can be transfered to fibres. During this illustrated talk Judy will briefly cover methods of natural dyeing and show examples of a range of plants that achieve particular colours. Judy will also talk about the tradiational use if natural dyes abroad from the Oochineal dyes of Peru. Silver Jewellery Recycled with Kathryn Arbon More information coming soon. Natural Dyeing with Judy Hardman During this workshop you will obtain a range of colours in wool and silk yarns using a variety of plants to produce sample cards for your future reference. The tutor will provide prehanked yarn ready for dye baths. Botanical Illustration with Sally Pinhey Experienced artist or enthusiastic beginner? This workshop looks at the essential skills for illustrating plants in watercolour, within the context of your own project. It includes observation, and preliminary sketches, composition, colour washes, detail and presentation. Plastic Cutlery Bugs with Peter Rush More information coming soon. Drawing for Beginners with Yvonne Lee A workshop for anyone who thinks they can't draw. You will gradually learn and build up techniques throughout the day which will help establish confidence in your abilities and produce results to take home. Everyone can draw! Leatherwork with Graham Tench During this one day workshop you will learn the basic techniques of leather carving with an outcome of a purse or credit card holder as well as test items. You will cover working in leather, carving, dyeing, stamping, riviting and stitching. Applique with Mary Bird This course concentrates on the technique of applique, using hand and machine techniques and exploring both traditional and contemporary methods. The first six classes will be used to build a comprehnsive reference portfolio of techniques. Photography Workshops - Camera Obscura with Double Exposure. A comprehensive introduction to the world of photography, from two fully qualified working professionals. An excellent opportunity to start, improve or even refine your current ability level.
