Yvonne Morton

Fibre Artist

19th June - 25th July 2010

The curation of this exhibition presents an excellent opportunity for Walford Mill Crafts in Wimborne, Dorset to exhibit a significant body of work by this very talented and creative fibre artist.

Yvonne trained at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design (now the Arts University). After teaching and assessing for City and Guilds of London Institute, she now concentrates on exhibiting her stitched textiles in solo groups and shows. Her work is in private and public collections.

Yvonne has always attracted a great following for her work. As a successful maker she was brave in her willingness to break away from a style that she had been comfortable with for many years, in order to make a deliberate change of direction. In 2003 she had her first major solo show of this new body of work at Walford Mill Crafts. Yvonne’s ability to push boundaries and experiment with new techniques and processes allowed her to achieve this goal. Her recent work has unfolded and moved forward through her skill and experimentation.

Yvonne found her inspiration through research into African cultural identities and in particular the Kuba tribes of the Congo, formally Zaire. Her keen eye determines the innuendos and subtleties that capture the very essence of the mood in each image that she creates. Yvonne’s love of fabric is self-evident. Her ability to make her own fabrics is a major part of this work. Yvonne has a special way of controlling, manipulating, layering, mark making and deconstructing each piece until it conveys the story of the Kuba tribes and their rituals. Cloth, as comfort and protection, is of primary importance in her current work.

Yvonne Morton's exhibiton will be at Walford Mill Crafts from Saturday 19th June until Sunday 25th July 2010.
