Here at Walford Mill Crafts we deliver a comprehensive workshop programme using local and nationally recognised makers. Please see below for information on all forthcoming workshops at Walford Mill Crafts.

Please note some classes require you to purchase extra materials or to bring materials and/or equipment with you. Please contact the tutor for details of materials and equipment needed for each class.

Booking is essential for all workshops and is done direct with the tutor.

Walford Mill reserves the right to cancel, postpone or alter published arrangements at their discretion.

In this workshop you will learn all the skills and techniques needed to craft your own wooden spoons. You will be taught the safe use of the axe, sloyd knife and crook knife as well as how to select wood for carving and ultimately how to make some wonderful wooden spoons!

Participants can expect to finish the day with a brand new hobby to continue at home as well as a lovely wooden spoon or two.

For those not ready to commit to a full day's carving, these 3 hour workshops are a great introduction into the wonderful world of spoon carving.

This one-day workshop is perfect for beginners looking to learn a new technique.

You will be taught the principles of designing for print, how to separate your design into two colours, methods for cutting lino, and how to print a two colour reduction print on Robin's 1854 Albion press.

Saturday 29th February - Silver Clay and Dichroic Glass workshop - with Grainne Reynolds

Design and make your own beautiful solid silver pendant incorporating a stunningly colourful nugget of dichroic glass.

In this workshop you will learn ...

  • How to cut, layer and fuse pieces of glass in a kiln to make your very own nugget of dichroic glass.
  • How to handle, roll, texture and layer the silver clay
  • How to roll silver clay coils.
  • How to make embellishments to add to your design.
  • How to incorporate a piece of dichroic glass within your pendant design.
  • How to form and attach a handmade bail.
 

This is a fun and informal workshop which is suitable for beginners and for those with some experience of using silver clay who would like to further develop their skills and knowledge.

*Please note all pieces will be kiln fired and posted out to participants this is due to the length of time the glass requires to cool down.

Saturday 4th/Sunday 5th April - Stained Glass Panel Making - with Jackie Hunt

This course will enable you to create your own stained glass panel using the traditional method of combining coloured glass with lead. The panel you make will be suitable to either build into a window, or frame as a hanging panel.

The course involves working with coloured, clear and textured glass; learning how to handle and cut glass safely and to 'lead up' a panel.  All glass, tools and equipment will be provided for use on the course. Glass and lead will be provided to enable you to make a panel slightly smaller than A4 size. If you have specific requirements we may be able to agree another size (extra materials would be charged pro rata) – but only if discussed in advance of the course dates.

No experience is needed.  This is an informal workshop with a small number of participants and there will be demonstrations and practical help throughout. If you have some experience of making stained glass you can use this course as an opportunity to improve your skills.

The tutor Jackie Hunt is a professional stained glass artist.  She has a design training as well as specific training in architectural glass and has taught workshops and evening classes for more than fourteen years in Dorset, Somerset, Yorkshire and Cumbria, including Weymouth College, Craven College and at Leeds College of Art.

Saturday 9th May - Silver Stacking Ring Workshop - with Grainne Reynolds

In this lovely wonderful workshop you will have the opportunity to make a set of 3 beautiful silver stacking rings. You will be using a combination of magical silver clay and sterling silver wire to make your rings.

You will learn...

  • How to make decorative elements from silver clay such as hearts, stars, flowers, buttons and shells (the possibilities are endless!)
  • How to set a sparkly gem stone into silver clay.
  • How to form 3 dainty simple ring bands using sterling silver wire.
  • How to solder your decorative elements onto your ring bands.
  • How to finish and polish your rings.
 

You will go home wearing a beautiful set of shiny made to measure stacking rings at the end of the day.

This workshop is ideal for those who have used silver clay before and would like to further develop their skills and knowledge. Beginners are very welcome too, I will guide you and help you through each step of the process.

Please note material a fee of £15 is payable on the day.

For this workshop you will be using 5g of silver clay and sterling silver wire a selection of sparkly cubic zirconia will also be available.

Saturday 6th June - Inspired by Nature - Silver Clay - Grainne Reynolds

Come and make your own solid silver jewellery from silver clay, inspired by nature this fun and informal workshop is suitable for beginners and those with some experience. In this class we will be using natural forms such as shells, leaves, seed pods and flowers to make moulds and to texture the silver clay. Each student will have the opportunity to make between 1-4 pieces dependant on if they choose to work big or small.

You will learn…

  • How to make reusable moulds and create texture mats using leaves, seed pods, fossils, shells and feathers etc
  • How to use the moulds and textures with silver clay to create a pendant, charms or earrings.
  • How to refine and tidy your piece for a good finish.
  • How to fire, polish and patinate your jewellery to highlight detail and make your design pop!
