Saturday 4th/Sunday 5th April - Stained Glass Panel Making - with Jackie Hunt

This course will enable you to create your own stained glass panel using the traditional method of combining coloured glass with lead. The panel you make will be suitable to either build into a window, or frame as a hanging panel.

The course involves working with coloured, clear and textured glass; learning how to handle and cut glass safely and to 'lead up' a panel. All glass, tools and equipment will be provided for use on the course. Glass and lead will be provided to enable you to make a panel slightly smaller than A4 size. If you have specific requirements we may be able to agree another size (extra materials would be charged pro rata) – but only if discussed in advance of the course dates.

No experience is needed. This is an informal workshop with a small number of participants and there will be demonstrations and practical help throughout. If you have some experience of making stained glass you can use this course as an opportunity to improve your skills.

The tutor Jackie Hunt is a professional stained glass artist. She has a design training as well as specific training in architectural glass and has taught workshops and evening classes for more than fourteen years in Dorset, Somerset, Yorkshire and Cumbria, including Weymouth College, Craven College and at Leeds College of Art.

Get closer to nature, by ‘Drawing from observation’ with tuition and guidance by Artist/Tutor, Julie Herring.

Friendly, adult classes, suitable for beginners and improvers.

Subjects over the various drawing classes with Julie will be Spring flowers, seasonal flora, hedgerows, shells and a selection of items from the tutor’s own natural collection.

Indoor or outdoor sketching. Please bring sketchbooks and pencils and/or watercolours. Other materials provided.

Sunday 19th April 2020 - Needle-Felted Animal Pictures - with Linda Courtney

Creating an animal picture on fabric using wool fibres and needle-felting techniques.

All materials are provided and the equipment necessary will be available for you to use during the session.

There will be plenty of reference pictures but feel free to bring along a photo of a favourite animal or pet.

With an all day session the aim is to provide a relaxed environment where you can work at your own pace but if you are a fast worker then there will be other mini projects to try!

Tea/Coffee and Cake provided but please bring along a packed lunch.

Saturday 9th May - Silver Stacking Ring Workshop - with Grainne Reynolds

In this lovely wonderful workshop you will have the opportunity to make a set of 3 beautiful silver stacking rings. You will be using a combination of magical silver clay and sterling silver wire to make your rings.

You will learn...

  • How to make decorative elements from silver clay such as hearts, stars, flowers, buttons and shells (the possibilities are endless!)
  • How to set a sparkly gem stone into silver clay.
  • How to form 3 dainty simple ring bands using sterling silver wire.
  • How to solder your decorative elements onto your ring bands.
  • How to finish and polish your rings.
 

You will go home wearing a beautiful set of shiny made to measure stacking rings at the end of the day.

This workshop is ideal for those who have used silver clay before and would like to further develop their skills and knowledge. Beginners are very welcome too, I will guide you and help you through each step of the process.

Please note material a fee of £15 is payable on the day.

Places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment.

For this workshop you will be using 5g of silver clay and sterling silver wire a selection of sparkly cubic zirconia will also be available.

Friday 22nd May - Creative Clay - Deborah Clarke

Botanical tiles - part of creativity and wellbeing week

Bring the essence of your garden or hedgerows as it begins to turn to summer. Capture all the form and details of the delicate petals and leaves in clay. Colour can be added to highlight the plant forms and add depth to the piece. This is a friendly relaxed workshop suitable for beginners and those who have enjoyed clay before. You will be able to make two 6" tiles or three 4" tiles which will be kiln fired and ready for collection about two weeks later from Walford Mill.

Sunflower bowls - part of creativity and wellbeing week

A relaxed class exploring textures and layering clay to create a beautiful sculptural flower bowl. The sunflower has many meanings across the world including positivity and strength to admiration and loyalty. A beautiful flower that follows the sun. This class is suitable for all abilities. The space is wheelchair accessible too. Your bowls will be fired in the kiln and returned to Walford Mill about two weeks later for collection.

Saturday 6th June - Inspired by Nature - Silver Clay - Grainne Reynolds

Come and make your own solid silver jewellery from silver clay, inspired by nature this fun and informal workshop is suitable for beginners and those with some experience. In this class we will be using natural forms such as shells, leaves, seed pods and flowers to make moulds and to texture the silver clay. Each student will have the opportunity to make between 1-4 pieces dependant on if they choose to work big or small.

You will learn…

  • How to make reusable moulds and create texture mats using leaves, seed pods, fossils, shells and feathers etc
  • How to use the moulds and textures with silver clay to create a pendant, charms or earrings.
  • How to refine and tidy your piece for a good finish.
  • How to fire, polish and patinate your jewellery to highlight detail and make your design pop!
 

Please note, there is an additional fee of £25 for materials that will be payable on the day.

Sunday 7th June - Introduction to Silver Clay - with Claire Marshall

Come and explore the magical world of Silver Clay.

On this one day introductory course you will learn how to handle, roll, texture, cut, fire and finish your own designs.

By the end of the day you will have two or three pieces of (hallmark quality 999) Silver Jewellery ready to wear on your way home, along with plenty of new skills.

Small class sizes in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

This course is perfect for beginners or those wishing to refresh their skills.

Sunday 14th June - Surface Decoration - Deborah Clarke

In this workshop you will be introduced to a range of surface decoration possibilities. Throughout the day you will practise on leather hard tiles learning and exploring a range of techniques including incising, I laying, sgraffito and masking. You are welcome to bring sketches or designs to create in clay. The tiles will be fired in the kiln and returned to the mill about two weeks later for collection.
