Sat 21st Aug - Bark Containers - Jack Fazey Join Fazey Woodcraft for a chance to have a go at making your own tree bark storage containers! Bark containers are one of, if not the oldest way to contain foodstuffs, liquids & other goods. In this workshop we will be using methods and materials that span back thousands of years into pre-history to create a beautiful, strong & sustainable container from Birch Bark. This style of container is possibly my favourite of all. An ingenuous method of making which involves clever finger tab joints and friction. No glue, no nails, no modern materials. An immensely satisfying experience. A history of the use of bark, roots & wood plus examples of harvesting, storing and working with these materials will lead us up to the main task of the day, creating your very own natural tupperware. The gathering and harvesting of materials for projects such as this is completely dependent on the seasons. Spring is the time to gather materials, as the sap is running and the bark peels off the tree easily. Every spring I gather, dry and store materials in preparation for courses. The one exception to this is Birch bark. Due to our relatively mild winters Birch bark in the UK is unsuitable for making into containers. Thankfully, there are many crafts people still active in Northern Europe harvesting and supplying Birch Bark for the uses mentioned above. Venue: Walford Mill Crafts in Wimborne All tools & materials are provided. Please Bring Your Own Lunch. To book online visit: https://www.fazeywoodcraft.uk/product-page/ancient-crafts COVID - 19 Please note all scheduled workshops will be running, adhering to government guidelines. If the situation changes and a workshop has to be rescheduled due to covid-19 a voucher or refund will be offered. |
