Spice Routes
January 10th – February 22nd 2009
This January, there will be a colourful exhibition at Walford Mill Crafts, which will paint the winter in deep reds and oranges, also rich browns and terracottas. Mainly inspired by the colours of spices such as cinnamon, cassia, cardamom, ginger and turmeric, ‘Spice Routes’ will feature mixed contemporary craftwork.
Visitors to Spice Routes will have the opportunity to experience the warmth of these rich colours in different mediums including metal, textiles, ceramics, jewellery, wood and glass.
One of the exhibitors, woodturner Dennis Hales’ love of wood will be reflected in his wide range of decorative turned pieces that will feature delicious colours of cinnamon, cardamom and turmeric.

Glasswork alongside other mediums, produced with unique methods and techniques will be on show in Spice Routes. Carole Waller who is an internationally renowned textile artist has recently developed a way of working with glass to enclose the fragile fabric membrane in a tough monumental material. Her inspiration comes from her interest in human presence and absence in real space some of her work reflects the people on their journey on the Spice Routes. Lara and Jon Oakley of Lara Aldridge Glass create kiln formed glassware where they merge metal in glass to create spectacular forms. A journey was the inspiration behind their work on show in the gallery.
Spice Routes will also feature aluminium and knitted wire jewellery, many textile creations from cushions to paper and silk pictures, metal gilded vessels that are inspired by rich textures and colours and other unique craftwork.
