Walford Mill Crafts’ Touring Exhibition

Lois Walpole

September 11th – October 24th 2010

A retrospective solo Touring Exhibition of the work of Lois Walpole.

This exhibition will be touring until 2012

More than 30 pieces spanning a 28 year international career that demonstrates the range of skills and variety of materials employed that have made her work unique. Using the medium of the basket, an instantly recognisable form, she has explored the use of natural and recycled materials to create objects that communicate on many levels, aesthetically and intellectually.

Sculptural, extraordinary, amusing, beautiful these objects question our expectations of how a basket should look and what it should be made of and what we really mean when we refer to ‘waste materials’.

The use of recycled materials in functional and ‘traditional’ baskets all over the world is becoming increasingly common when environmental and social factors make it difficult for makers, particularly those in urban environments, to have access to natural materials. A small, didactic exhibition of examples of these baskets accompanies this show and provides a glimpse of how this craft is not an anachronism, as often viewed, but is, as a consequence of the ingenuity of the makers, adapting to a changing world in innovative and surprising ways.
